Preparing Uneven Floors for Smooth and Durable New Flooring

Floor Levelling Compounds in Kildare are widely used in homes and workplaces to fix uneven surfaces, and knowing how they work can save you time and money.

KILDARE, Ireland – Every new floor is only as good as the base it sits on, and small dips or ridges have a habit of showing through tiles, vinyl and timber. Floor Levelling Compounds in Kildare are widely used in homes and workplaces to fix uneven surfaces, and knowing how they work can save you time and money.

A levelling compound is a cement-based or resin-modified mixture. This is poured onto a prepared floor and runs out under its own weight into a smooth, flat layer. It’s a sound surface. The idea is to fix a bumpy surface. It is not intended to repair a cracked, broken or structurally unsound floor.

As a general rule, compounds suit floors that differ by about 5 mm or less. Anything bigger is usually a screed, laid thicker and capable of building up real depth where a thin compound can't. The problem is that if you pick the wrong one, you tend to have problems further down the line.

Most of the preparation takes place before the compound is poured. The floor should be clean, dry and stable. Remove dust, grease, paint and loose bits, as these will prevent the compound from bonding. Fill cracks and holes. Large voids pool the mix unevenly. Weak laitance on concrete may need to be ground off.

Once the floor is prepared, the next step is applying primer. It helps the compound stick, it allows the base to absorb the water evenly, and it diminishes pinholes, those small imperfections on the surface that can weaken the finish. Check the manufacturer’s data sheet to verify that the primer is compatible with the base and compound being used.

Moisture is another important factor to check. Any moisture left in the base can prevent a compound from curing properly, and each product has its own limit. Good installers will take a moisture reading first. If the floor is too wet, a moisture barrier coating can be applied before any levelling work commences.

Since products vary considerably, choosing the right Floor Levelling Compounds in Kildare is mainly about finding the right mix for the situation. Some are made for thin domestic layers, others can cope with greater depth, fibre-reinforced types can deal with slight movement in the base, and some grades are built for use over underfloor heating.

Mixing also needs careful attention. If you add too much water, the ingredients will separate, and the finished layer will be weakened, so it is worth sticking to the stated ratio. The compound is poured in a single continuous pour, troweled into the corners and usually rolled with a spiked roller to release trapped air bubbles.

Estimating the required quantity is easier than you might think. Coverage is quoted in terms of per mm thickness, and some products use about 1.5kg per square meter for each mm applied. First, find the lowest and highest points on the floor to get a good idea of how much material to order.

Finally, temperature and drying time need attention. Many products are designed for conditions between about 5°C and 25°C, and the floor should not be laid until the compound has cured as per the instructions. If anyone has any doubts about the condition of their
